ArcelorMittal

Social Investment

ArcelorMittal South Africa accepts that social development cannot be the sole responsibility of government. Through public-private sector partnerships the company engages its skills and resources to broaden the base of the economy and ensure that it serves the broader community. As a responsible corporate citizen, the company endeavours to assist in promoting social development by building capacity within our broader society with a particular emphasis on education.

ArcelorMittal South Africa's Corporate Social Investment (CSI) strategy is underpinned by the following principles:

          Addressing socio-economic imbalances.

          Contributing to meaningful transformation.

Aligning objectives with government programmes such as ASGISA (Accelerated & Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa).

Empowering historically disadvantaged communities to become self-sufficient.

Promoting employee participation in social projects.

To this end our CSI programme is focused on benefiting historically disadvantaged communities and forming partnerships or strategic alliances with government departments to leverage the already substantial corporate social responsibility funding that we provide.

Leading the CSI strategy is our investment in education. In 2009 ArcelorMittal South Africa launched its R250 million school building programme with the Department of Education, which will see the company build 10 schools in all provinces over the next few years using steel as its primary building material. The first school – the Meetse-a-Bophelo primary school for 1 200 pupils in Mamelodi, Pretoria – is scheduled for completion early 2010.

Also on the education front the company operates two Science Centres, one in Sebokeng near our Vanderbijlpark Works, and the other in Saldanha. The centres offer additional mathematics, science and English education to learners from schools in these areas.

Furthermore, skills development programmes and affirmative action employment practices continue to receive our full attention. Over the past 10 years we have invested some R220 million in social development initiatives.

In summary our key focus CSI areas are:

Education with special emphasis on the development of human potential in the fields of mathematics, science and technology through a variety of initiatives.

          Job creation and poverty alleviation.

          Health & Safety.

          BBBEE & SME development.

          Arts & Culture.

          Environment.
